The Obama Doctrine
That's what the Politico is claiming some are saying. The Politico provides a short digest of what Obama said in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, which is being thrown about as the "Obama Doctrine," which is "a notion that foreign policy is a struggle of good and evil, that American exceptionalism has blunted the force of tyranny in the world, and that U.S. military can be a force for good and even harnessed to humanitarian ends." Having read parts of Obama's speech, the preceding quote does indeed seem to be what Obama is saying. He admits there is evil in the world and also states "Whatever mistakes we have made, the plain fact is this: the United States of America has helped underwrite global security for more than six decades with the blood of our citizens and the strength of our arms,” and “The service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform has promoted peace and prosperity from Germany to Korea, and enabled democracy to take hold in places like the Balkans." I am not convinced that Obama believes these fine words, because he so often says whatever he thinks will suit the occasion. However, if he does believe these words, I think it means he has grown in office. Although these concepts have always been at the core of conservative thought, I am perfectly happy to let Obama adopt such a doctrine and to let it be named the "Obama Doctrine." Had Bush given the exact same speech, he would have been roundly booed, so I am watching the left to see their reaction.

Guy Stephenson just posted this on his facebook profile:
"A nonviolent movement could not have halted Hitler's armies. Negotiations cannot convince al-Qaida's leaders to lay down their arms. To say that force is sometimes necessary is not a call to cynicism, it is a recognition of history. For make no mistake: Evil does exist in the world." That was President Bush. I don't beleive Obama's "doctrine" is uniquly his own. Bush already eluded to that....but because it came from him and not Mr. Popularity, it didn't mean anything to any one.
I watched his acceptance speech and it seems that indeed the same speech could well have been a speech delivered by a republican president as well. Many republican, right wing, conservatives have come out praising Obama's speech. Even Sarah Palin said it was a good speech and well delivered. She basically said she did not find any fault in his speech. FOX & Friends this morning with Geraldo Rivera praised his speech as well. Whether the speech is what Obama really believes or not will be debated in the comming weeks.
I listened to parts of it on NPR and I admit that I haven't had the time to read the whole thing or think it through.
I would suggest you release your distrust and wariness on this one.
He has not yanked us out of Iraq as feared.
He has not only authorized the over-the-border attacks on Al-Quaida/Taliban operatives in Pakistan but has augmented the number - more than Bush did- since his inauguration.
He has agreed to send 30,000 more troops.
He authorized the Navy Seals to take out Somali pirates.
Maybe you can judge him on his deeds in this domain.
