Much hullaballoo about a mosque that will be built two blocks from ground zero.
I am confounded by those who stand so firmly against the building of this place of worship.
Mayor Bloomberg of New York City said yesterday, "Whatever you may think of the proposed mosque and community center, lost in the heat of the debate has been a basic question--should government attempt to deny private citizens the right to build a house of worship on private property based on their particular religion? That may happen in other countries, but we should never allow it to happen here. This nation was founded on the principle that the government must never choose between religions, or favor one over another."
The local Islamic society owns the land, the existing zoning and building codes do not prohibit religious buildings or community centers in this area. I can think of no reason that could possibly trump the free exercise this religion's right to build a house of worship in this location.

From a legal point of view, sure the mosque can be built, and considering all the hoops that the LDS church goes through to build temples, I am quite happy to allow various religions build where they wish in accordance with building codes. However, just because something is legal doesn't make it the right thing to do. I really wish that everyone would acknowledge the obvious in this case. The mosque is aimed at rubbing salt in a wound. a symbolic flag of victory, and an insensitive gesture near a newly important landmark. Muslims have a bad habit of building mosques on or near sites of victorious battles. The purpose of the mosque should be obvious to all.
Ummm, I don't share the perception that Muslims are attempting to rub salt in the wound or the notion of symbolic victory.
I have made no secret of my disdain for Islam as a religion, I am no fan of them building mosques anywhere frankly. But they have the right identical to the rights of other religions regardless of my personal feeling, emotions, or perceptions. I guess we agree!
