I just came back from an overnight layover in Cancun, Mexico. Why is it that it seems all Mexicans in Mexico speak English or try to speak English to me but here in Georgia I cannot find 1 in 5 that speak English?
Dear Brian, In Mexico they need to speak English to help & work in the tourist trade. They want to use the Americans for the cash they receive. Those already in the USA do not NEED to have that, as they are already earning the $.
They aren't forced to learned it here because so many services provide help in spanish. It's the same for me in Belgium. I don't have to learn French in Belgium, because so many people speak English that I can get by with no problem. Since I can get by, I have no need to learn it. I am not appossed to non-English speakers here in the states. Most do come and try. I know my in-laws took classes, I drove them there, I reviewed what they learned with them, and tried to help...but they just couldn't remember what they learned. I have the same memory problem with my French class in Brussels. I can't get it to stick in my head and remember it. I have to walk around with a notebook all day to look up the word I want to use. Learning a language at an older age is harder! I can testify to that. But when the need to learn it is diminished because I can find help in my native language....that adds to my not trying as hard to pursue learning it. :)
