Mitt Romney: flying low and laughing all the way!

The antics or even outright political demise of Ensign, the SC gov, soon ex-gov Palin are opening wide the door for Mitt Romney to be the next Republican presidential nominee. The guy from Louisiana (B. Jindle ?) had a bad debut, Republicans can't seem to find a leader, Huckabee is not strong enough to win nationally, I know, I'm rambling which is exactly what the Republican Party is doing these days. Rambling without a firm message. Romney is being wise and I bet following the advice of his handlers: let the rivals hang themselves, you'll be the last man standing!

I have to agree with every word you wrote. The Republicans have been in self-immolation mode since McCain won the nomination, but I would like to point out that Gov. Pawlenty in Minnesota has been a very clever politician. I follow Minnesota politics a bit, and he has simply out-maneuvered and outclassed the Dem-dominated Minnesota house and senate, so much so that by law he as control of the budget for the next two years. I wouldn't count Pawlenty out. In fact, Romney and Pawlenty could form a formidable ticket, with either one in either position.

I agree with Doug too. Go Mitt! I really hope that Sarah does not try to run for anything in the Fed. National Governement in 2012. I don't dislike her, but enough people do that would completely hand another win over to Obama if she were on the GOP ticket. She is not right for this right now. I think she needs more experience and time in politics. Unfortunately, she just took her self away from that opportunity by resigning.

Although I agree with much of what Doug wrote, I can't say I agree with all of it. I feel both parties are running amuck right now and both parties are "rambling". For the first time I heard a democrat, namely Biden, take responsibility for the current economy. He said it is "our economy now" and that they "underestimated" its condition. This indicates to me they are just rambling as well...guessing their way through bailout after bailout.

Each party has a leader...Kaine for the Dems and Duncan for the Repubs. As far as front runners for office of Pres. it is much to early. Lets wait at least another year or year and a half.

Mitt is smart to stay under the radar right now. But isn't is contradictory to say it is smart to stay out of the spot light but at the same time say that there is no leader? Which do we expect to be smarter...stay low or stay in the spotlight. We can't have it both ways.

I shouldn't like anyone to think that I favor Mr. Romney, but I think that he is playing is cards very well by not playing them at all this early in the game.
As Alan points out, Pawlenty is on the radar, but his name recognition is not that of Romney's. Having run once seriously, he is de facto a name that all recognize, and that is a great advantage in politics.

Minnesota, what an interesting state. The state that gives us two dems sens also gives us a potential repub pres candidate.

As for Palin, she is not and will not ever be a good presidential candidate: her comment today regarding the 'Department of Law' is laughable and indicates that she does not have the intellect to do that job. Please Republicans, you have a party with a rich tradition of great candidates. I am a Democrat to be sure, but I cannot for the life of me understand why Sarah Palin holds so much sway.

If Republicans persist in thinking that Palin is any option at all, they will fall into the same sorry state that Democrats have fallen; Gore and Kerry. These were not great candidates!

As for Brian's thought, the Democrats are indeed struggling, but I don't think they are rambling: they know what they are trying to accomplish and are putting their shoulders to the wheel: health care is a good example that shows a very precise direction and philosophy whether or not you agree with it.

Palin is liked by conservatives because she seems to be a like-minded person. Nevertheless, she would be a disastrous candidate. Should she win the nomination, Obama would likely serve a second term. Romney has a good chance to be the nominee, but in 2012, Democrat voters will be free to play mischief in the Republican primaries where crossover voting is allowed (allowing crossover voting is stunningly stupid IMO), so weird things can happen.
