The question for Obama in 2012 is: Will he keep Biden on the ticket? In terms of campaigning, he is quite a liability. He loves to blabber on and say things contrary to the talking points. I think Obama will likely be on defense in 2010 and thereafter, so he will need a better attack dog than Biden.

I don't recall ever seeing a President change his VP while running for re-election. Does that happen often? What message would that send?
I don't know that I have any recollection of that happening either...I just don't know.
Yes. It has happened, but I can't remember or find reference to the occasion when it did. It was a long time ago. Anyway, if the Republican nomination is a strong one (like a Romney-Pawlenty or vice versa ticket) and the economy is still in the dumps, then I think Obama will necessarily needs to put a stronger candidate on the ticket.
That would be a slap in the face to Biden if he fired his VP and looks for another one. Also, what would it say about his earlier judgment? It might be as questionable/laughable as McCains judgement to put Palin on his ticket. Maybe you are right, he needs to change his next running mate...but will he? If he does, he'll probably ask Biden to step down privately and make it look like Biden doesn't want the job now, so he can gracefully change candidates.
Whatever happens, Teresa is probably right on. It cannot look he was asked to step down. I don't expect any change at all regardless.
Related but with no bearing on Obama VP's choice for 2012: Cheney was more villainized and disrespected than Bush for Bush's entire 8 years. Off the cuff comments, shooting accidents, lesbian daughter, Haliburton connections, there was plenty of fodder. Bush kept him. I am sure you see Biden as more of a burden to Obama than Cheney was to Bush, but I don't share that opinion at all.
You've seen the t-shirts and bumper stickers
'Ain't skeerd'. I 'ain't skeerd' or even remotely worried about our 'Joe': (after all, you guys had Joe the Plumber!)
Yes, we had Joe the Plumber, who is much maligned by the left and the press, but conservatives liked him.
I think the difference between Cheney and Biden is that Biden is an empty suit. He has no 'gravitas' as the media puts it. Biden is a gaffe a minute, whereas Cheney is measured in his words. As for his lesbian daughter, conservatives didn't have a problem with that, but apparently John Edwards did.
VoilĂ , we just disagree on this.
