the D-News and the the SL Tribune.
Civil unions are not going to happen for some time in Utah, but I believe that there is a very moderate Republican center that realizes that times are changing. It is, I believe, a matter of time before the nation no longer withholds marriage rights to gays and lesbians even if the word marriage does not accompany the rights.
Republican candidates in Democratic SL City hold very different positions on this issue than Republicans in most parts of Utah. A good example is Equality Utah's annual Allies Dinner. This past year, all three Republican candidates for SLC mayor were in attendance and were courting votes. (Equality Utah is the state's GLBT political action committee. )
Our great nation has always, albeit sometimes very slowly, moved in the direction of inclusion.

Has the Nation as a whole moved more towards inclusion or apathy? Perhaps the nation is just so tired of fighting the battle that they just don't care any more. I got that way with students on some occations. After struggling with them for so long to get them to follow simple rules - with some kids I just had to throw my hands up and say "I give up". Just a thought.
I have always been for equal rights but for "partners". It is just the insisted use of term marriage. I still believe and will always believe that marriage should be between members of the opposite sex. Traditional term works for me but all for equal social rights it that all makes sense.
I have the same problem as Kim, even at BYU. However, Kim makes a good point in that people may not agree with the move toward marriage or civil unions, but they get tired of fighting the battle and eventually acquiesce.
I tend to believe that progressive social changes often need a period of 'airing out' time, time to get others used to the notion of change. This period usually gives a lot of time for thought, discussion, trial, and finally acceptance of some sort. The women's suffrage movement, the emancipation of blacks, interracial marriage, women in the military etc all took a period of acclimatization. True, I think that one can tire of arguing and acquiesce in some areas of life, but not on big issues; otherwise I would have to truly question the fundamental beliefs so easily abandoned. In this case, as in the cases above, I believe it is the march of justice and fairness that wins the day in the intellects of the fair-minded.
