Two Brazilians

Early this morning representatives of the Department of Defense briefed the President Of The United States (POTUS)concerning a tragic overnight event in Iraq.

They told President Obama that two (2)Brazilian soldiers had been killed in combat operations.

To everyone’s surprise, all the color drained from Obama’s face. Visibly shaken, he
then collapsed onto his desk, his head buried in his hands and he seemed to be almost in tears.

He finally seemed able to compose himself, raised his head and asked “Just how many
is a Brazilian?”

This is not at all surprising folks since he obviously has no concept of a Billion or
a Trillion either.

This is the perception that many voters have about government in general: billions, trillions, bazillions, it's all Monopoly money. This is exactly why so many voters are upset with the current state of affairs. We work hard and pay our taxes, and then government bureaucrats and politicians alike squander it away. What the voter can't understand, and rightful so, is that if voters must and can live within a budget, why can't governments? It is a constant exercise in anger management for me and many others.

I am ready to support some serious cutting and to make some sacrifices beyond those that we make already, but the reality is that we will not be able to agree on what to cut. I say cut military, foreign aid, and money spent on the drug war for starters. I would also cut government programs that subsidize farmers and non-banking corporations and meddle in entrepreneurship, but unfortunately within our own family we will not agree too much. And therein lies a microcosm that exemplifies the greater debate which of course is magnified out of control at the national legislative level.

What? Not help farmers?
What? Weaken our military?
What? Not encourage invention?
What? Let drugs run wild?
What? Let Israel go under?
What? Let not give to blankety-blank-istan?

I would be willing to pay more in temporary taxes if I thought for a second that it would be delivered to the overall debt or even the current deficit, but it wouldn't, we all know it.

Neither party, whether it be Obama and the Democrats now, or Bush and his Republicans before dare (dared) to make any real steps to control government spending. If Mitt gets elected in 2012 or any other Republican, he or she will have to answer the same questions: What to cut, and how to raise the funds, and with what kind of cooperation from what Congress.

It seems out of control and hopeless.
So what will the Republican propose? Will Obama's current initiatives bare any fruit?

Yes. It's always a question of whose ox is being gored. That's why I would like to see an across the board cut in spending, including military, foreign aid, NASA, education, and entitlement spending (social security, welfare, medicare, unemployment, etc.). In this way, everyone will have to sacrifice, but most programs can continue. Also, earmarks need to be ended. The across-the-board cuts should be at a level that balances the budget.
