Has he nothing better to do?

I am opposed to President Obama flying off to push for the Olympics for Chicago. It is unseemly and inappropriate for the office. I don't care if Tony Blair and others have done it before him. It is enough that Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey and whoever else go there.

Afghanistan in a growing crisis, the economy eternally haunting us, a desperate need for health care reform, Iran kicking up dust and spitting in everyone's face, an undisciplined Democratic Party that can't unite, an über-partisan Republican Party who wants his demise the-good-of-the-country be damned, wholly unresolved border and immigration issues on the back-burner,
and he needs to go to Denmark or wherever it is to lobby for the Olympics? And if he succeeds and the Oly's come here, what will be said? American hegemony again! The bully pulpit again!
Americans are throwing their weight around as usual!

If he feels he must add something to his plate, he ought to focus on stopping the fierce and inexplicably appalling violence taking place daily among Chicago's poor youth.

Wasting his time with the Olympics? What an awful decision. This is not why I voted for him.

I have nothing against him pushing the Olympics in Chicago. It is his home base after all, so it is somewhat understandable. Nevertheless, he does have more important things to do. He has spoken with the General in charge of Afghanistan only once in the passed 70 days (as stated on 60 Minutes)! I got whiplash when heard that one. Sometimes I think Obama leaves things for the system to work out and he stays unengaged while speaking platitudes from afar.

I had to smile when you used the term "uber-partisan Republicans." Considering what the Dem party did during the Bush years, that is the pot calling the kettle black. Also considering that the inconsequential Republicans have essentially ZERO power, I am still amazed that there is such fixation on what the Republicans are doing. The Dems need to worry about keeping their own in line, and stop being fixated on the Republicans.

I agree that there are other things he should be working on. If we all lived in a utopian society and there wasn't anything else for the president to be doing then fine. But his priorities do seem to be a little off on this one.

I didn't really know what "uber-partisan" meant. I had never heard of "uber" as a prefix. Thanks for educating me guys.

The more I think about it, it bothers me less and less. I am sure the president of the United States has the multi-media capabilities to communicate with anyone about anything in the world from where ever he is.

Sure he could work on Air Force One and maybe just as effectively. Even though I used a full paragraph listing a few of the major problems that concern him and us, my first objection is the appropriateness of lobbying for a world wide festival. That is the domain of the city and state concerned not the president of the US.

In politics, the pot always calls the kettle black. That doesn't make the current facts any less so.

My original post is due to an increasing dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party. As Alan says, the opportunity is now theirs and they are squandering it. They seem to forget that a lot of us could (and have) vote (d) Green or Socialist.

Good point Doug, this should be a city/state matter, not a federal matter taking the president's time. I submit to your view point on this issue.

I guess I should never run for office because I have just flip-flopped and flip-flopped again!

Brian, I flip flop all the time. I am so gullible (in some respects). I hear one good fight and say "yea! He's right!" and then I hear the other's come back and I say "oh yea! Good point, he's right!" And then I cheer for the come back to the come back! I usually walk away having flip flopped a half a dozen times! That's why, unless I really feel pationatly about something, I won't go deep on anything! LOL

By the way...after reading everyone's opinion, I don't mind the President chiming in on and pushing for the Olympics in Chicago, but I don't think he should spend his time traveling around to do so, when there are more important issues on the table for him to be spending his time on. I agree with Doug about the youth of Chicago needing help as one of them. Wow, what awful things have gone on there recently.

Listening to various opinions and changing one's own is not flip-flopping. Flip-flopping is changing one's own opinions for GAIN or to mollify others. Changing one's opinions for the wrong reasons, that is flip-flopping. I changed my opinion on single-payer and I don't think I flip-flopped. My original opinion in favor of it was not well informed and knee-jerk, I admit.

Thanks for clarifying that Doug....I never had a clear meaning of the words flip-flop. I never pondered that I might need the clear meaning of the words. I wonder if it's in the dictionary.

I think Doug's distinction is correct, but in the world of politics, a politician is not going to let an opponent off the hook so easily.
