As a pilot, and without divulging my opinion, I was wondering how you all felt about this event of the controller allowing his kids in the tower. I assume we have all heard the tapes. Do you feel less safe?
I don't think any harm was done and I think that some over reacted. As long as the kids were under strict supervision, I don't think it was a problem. However, I don't think I would like such to happen routinely.
It didn't do any harm but I don't think it was a good idea even though it was cute and he was being supervised. Sometimes a child's voice can be difficult to understand on the phone, or over a speaker system, and that is what makes it unsafe...the possibility of the pilot misunderstanding the child's speech. Not a good idea.
The important thing here is public perception and confidence. It does nothing for my confidence to think that air traffic controllers are bringing their kids into the tower to spend time with them.
How about pilots bringing her/his kids into the cockpit and allowing them to make an announcement over the intercom while we're at it?

I feel the same as Teresa did. No harm done because of good supervision.
