Sunstone and Mormon thought

Do any of you subscribe to or read Sunstone magazine?

It is a magazine with no official ties to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is a magazine that publishes articles relevant to Mormonism from a variety of perspectives.
It seems that nearly all of its contributors are LDS and write from perspectives of faith.
It is well written, intellectually challenging, and respectful of faith in general and of the LDS
faith.

Years ago, I read it regularly and attended its symposiums here in Salt Lake City although its symposiums are held across the nation with the most recent one being in Seattle and the next one taking place in Independence, MO.

I just read some of the magazine to find out about it. I didn't like it. Not for me.

In general, church leadership has not looked favorably on the Sunstone organization. Excommunications have occurred based on the activities of some of the intellectuals who participated.
There is a wiki entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_Six) about one such incident. I don't know about the accuracy of this page.

Nevertheless, there are many prominent Mormon intellectuals who read and participate in the magazine, and obviously not all that is written there is contrary to church doctrine. The magazine simply operates outside the bounds of church management and oversight.

I watched a video podcast on Sunstone and was of the opinion that it was "eh, not that impressed." It was an interview with the founder of the Symposium and magazine. I got the impression though that the magazine was no longer published and had been discontinued. My mistake I guess.

I find the magazine really well done. The articles are scrutinized for their intellectual stimulation and high quality of writing. I am convinced that if non-Mormons spent any time reading it, they would view Mormons in a more favorable light. Knowing that 'others', and sometimes 'rivals or adversaries' are really thinking hard is enlightening...and provokes respect.

It is human nature to think we are the only ones doing such thinking or at least are thinking the best. I encourage you all to read it if you have the opportunity. Even though I am not a member of the church nor even a believer, I enjoy reading it.
It can be stimulating.
