The past few days Brian and I have been discussing some details about his computer, which is not performing as well as he would like. It's been about 15 years since I bought a computer off the shelf at a store. Such computers are often poorly built and are full of spyware and bloatware. When my computer does not run modern software in a satisfactory manner, I just buy new parts and fix it up, or I scrap it altogether and build a new one myself. It's fun, it's cheaper, and the computer runs much better.
What I am suggesting is that if any of you want or need a new computer, let me build it for you.
You won't get 24 hour technical service, but it will be cheaper and the computer will run faster. You just pay for the parts and shipping. If I have an old part that I don't need, I will throw that in for free. (my room and my closets are a computer junkyard!)

Maybe you can help me with my current computer problem. I have an HP Pavillion with the XP running system. It runs fine except that I cannot shut it down using the start, turn off your computer commend. Any suggestions?
I had that problem as well with XP. It's a software problem. Make sure you have updated your software.
Go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-xp/
and install service pack 3.
If that doesn't work you can curse Microsoft.
Amazing that you can build your own. Someday I will have to deal with all that myself when I finally no longer have a school computer serviced by techies at school.
Wow! Ok....I'll take you up on that. I'll get in touch with you after the first of the year as we are so ready to replace our PC. It is 5 years old now and has lots of problems. I'll e-mail you and tell you what we want most from our computer and maybe you can make some recommendations! T
I would be happy to do so. Just let me know. Be sure to tell me the max you are willing to spend and I will keep it under the limit.
Also, it just occurred to me that when some people say PC, they actually mean a laptop. I don't build laptops. They require special dimensions and handling and it ends up being more expensive than one bought off the shelf.
We took a class to learn on how to build a computer and it was very interesting. In fact, there are not too many pieces in there. Even after taking one apart and rebuilding it, I am still afraid to do it wrong. So, after we come back, we will talk about it. OK? I am super interested, my computer is now really old. Thank you for the offer.
I too would possibly be interested. I bought a computer (gaming purposes) for my kids a couple years ago and the graphics card is not great. My son, Max says that it is better then it was since he updated the graphics card on it. I am not sure what he did. He is actually pretty funny. He knows how to by pass things. I hear that there is a computer card (like a credit card) that you can monitor how much the kids are on at a time. Hope I can find it.
Just let me know what your respective budgets are and I will send you a list of components for your approval.
By PC, I was referring to Personal computer. Maybe that is an outdated term now. We have a really nice laptop, but our home computer/personal computer is near death. too old, too full, too slow. I really want Vista on my computer too. We still have Millenium.
Thank you, Alan. I did just what you suggested and it fixed my computer. You're goooood!
Thanks again!
Fabienne: I'm glad it worked for you!
Teresa: Millennium is probably the worst OS Microsoft ever sold. XP has then best reputation. I have Vista. Some people complain a lot about it, but I really like it.
I have a few old computer in my garage that I was going to give to DI. Would you be interested in any of them for parts? Let me know.
Regarding the graphics card, I have no idea what they would cost. Maybe I should just take it down to you to look at.
Recently, DI isn't doing anything with very old computers. They don't sell well, even at DI. I might be able to use some parts, but if the computer is very old or if it is a Dell, HP, Compaq, or another off-the-shelf computer, it is totally worthless. If you just want to do some simple word processing, such computers can still be of use, but computer parts are so cheap and easy to buy, one might as well have the latest.
