If you are able to comment as you have done above, you should be able to make a new post. Do you see "New Post" in the upper right hand corner (in the blue bar)? If so, click on that. If not, then there might be a problem. Let me know.
One possibility is that you have a pop-up blocker that is blocking access to the post page. Your browser also may be set to prevent pop-ups. You may need to adjust a setting in your browser options.

I know I have done this before, but I cannot seem to be able to make a new post. Am I missing something obvious?

Whe I click on "new post", nothing happens. If I right click it, then click "open", nothing happens either.

In Firefox:
Tools > Options > Contents Tab
It's something similar in IE, but I don't know what it is because I don't use IE.
I recommend that you switch over to Firefox. It's a much better browser and much safer.
